Localization - a key element in successful cross-cultural communication

What is localization?
Localization is the process of translating and adapting both the content (text and style) and the presentation (graphical and technical components) of an EXISTING product according to the language and cultural characteristics of the target audience or region for which it is intended.
Localization requires not only traditional translation skills but also technical expertise.

What about internationalization?
Internationalization is the process of designing and producing a NEW product that is culturally and technically universal.

Why localize a product?

Did you know that:
• certain concepts that are part of our language do not exist in other languages or cultures?
• our own cultural markers and references do not always evoke the same ideas in other cultures?
• symbols, images and colours do not always have the same meaning in different cultures?
• word length and text orientation can vary from one language to the next?
• units of measure, symbols for monetary units, date formats and other key elements can also vary?

The success of a multimedia or IT product available in several languages depends on the adaptation of both its content and its presentation. Localization addresses both aspects simultaneously and offers a number of benefits:
• It ensures that the needs of clients with linguistic and cultural differences are met
• It avoids potential misunderstandings
• It gives clients the confidence of knowing they are communicating effectively in both languages
